Description
Embroidered lungis are traditional wrap-around garments enhanced with decorative needlework, commonly worn across South Asia for both daily use and formal occasions. In Sri Lanka, they are particularly popular during the Avurudu (New Year) season and weddings, often sold as “lungi kits” that include matching material for a blouse or jacket.
- Floral Patterns: Many modern designs feature floral embroidery, such as sunflowers or floral vines, often rendered on linen or cotton fabrics.
- Traditional Motifs: Designs may include peacock feathers, traditional Sri Lankan symbols, or intricate ethnic patterns like Chikankari.
- Festive Details: For weddings and ceremonies, lungis may feature pearl work, silver zari (metallic thread) touch-ups, or appliquéd mirrors.
- Men’s Styles: Men’s embroidered lungis typically feature subtle embroidery on white or solid-colored backgrounds, often along the borders or in striped/checkered patterns.
